Why Adrenaline Feels Familiar with PTSD: Familiarity and Control: Individuals with PTSD live with constant, involuntary hyperarousal (fight-or-flight), creating a baseline of high stress. High-adrenaline activities match this internal state, making them feel “normal” or in control of the fear, rather than controlled by it. Overcoming Numbness: PTSD often leads to emotional numbing or a dissociation from feelings. A sudden rush of adrenaline can temporarily cut through this numbness, creating a sharp sense of alertness and emotion.”Comfortable” Danger: Because the amygdala is hypersensitive, a calm environment can feel un-trustworthy or boring. An adrenaline-inducing situation confirms their hypervigilant belief that the world is intense and dangerous, providing a sense of certainty.
